Savannah ZIP Directory Coverage
Savannah-area postal codes span the historic core, midtown, southside growth, westside industry, military land, and island communities. The areas below are broad search cues, not exact legal boundaries. USPS assigns delivery designations. SAGIS and local governments determine municipal geography. Verify each full address before relying on a neighborhood label, since streets and even blocks can cross a ZIP or city edge.
| ZIP Code | Areas Covered | Post Office | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 31401 | Downtown, Historic District, Victorian and east-central areas | Downtown delivery | Verify the exact address with USPS |
| 31404 | East Savannah, Gordonston and Thunderbolt-adjacent areas | Savannah service | Includes jurisdictional edges |
| 31405 | Midtown, west-central, Habersham and medical areas | Verify by address | City and county mix |
| 31406 | Southside, Sandfly and White Bluff corridors | Verify by address | City and unincorporated mix |
| 31407 | Northwest growth and Port Wentworth-adjacent area | Verify by address | Postal city may lie outside Savannah |
| 31408 | West side, airport and Garden City vicinity | Verify by address | Strong postal and city-line mismatch |
| 31409 | Hunter Army Airfield | Military use | Access restrictions apply |
| 31410 | Wilmington and Whitemarsh Islands, east county | Verify by address | Mostly island and unincorporated Chatham |
| 31411 | Skidaway Island and The Landings | Verify by address | Savannah mailing outside the core city |
| 31415 | West Savannah, Cuyler-Brownville and port edge | Verify by address | Check parcel jurisdiction |
| 31419 | Far Southside, Georgetown, Berwick and southwest growth | Verify by address | Broad city and county mix |
| 31421 | PO boxes | PO-box service | No residential geography |
The Savannah ZIP code directory includes special cases that must be read with care. The military use tied to 31409 has its own access setting. The 31421 code is for PO boxes and cannot map a household. Island codes 31410 and 31411 commonly carry Savannah as the postal city while lying beyond the core municipality. Post-office station assignments for every code were not confirmed in the research, so none are guessed here.
Savannah ZIP Geography Changes
Downtown 31401 and the island codes show why a postal name is not a government boundary. The former covers the historic center, where Oglethorpe's ward and lot system still appears in legal descriptions. The latter reach Wilmington, Whitemarsh, and Skidaway Island communities. A deed may use ward, lot, subdivision, or metes-and-bounds language even when the mailing label says Savannah.
Historic Savannah address searches also depend on direction. Bull Street divides east and west, while Bay Street is the north and south numbering origin in the 1910 directory system. Blocks usually advanced by 100. Modern honorary names may not replace the legal street name. A 2025 designation on part of Essex Avenue honored Annie Bell Graham but left Essex as the official parcel-search name.
The Savannah Sanborn map collection helps connect older street names, blocks, and building footprints.
Those sheets add historic context, but the current ZIP still needs USPS verification.
Savannah ZIP Boundary Hotspots
Southside codes 31406 and 31419 include both City of Savannah and unincorporated Chatham areas. The west and northwest codes create similar issues. A 31407 mailing address can sit near Port Wentworth, while 31408 spans the airport and Garden City vicinity. In 31415, west Savannah neighborhoods meet industrial and port land. Postal city text alone cannot select the right custodian.
Use the SAGIS municipality layer to answer the jurisdiction question. A county parcel is still searched through Chatham property systems, but permits, code cases, or local services may belong to Savannah, another municipality, or the county. This boundary check prevents a request from going to the wrong office and explains why two nearby addresses may follow different local rules.
Find Savannah Residents by ZIP
Begin with a complete address, not a neighborhood guess. The USPS ZIP Code Lookup accepts street address, apartment or suite, city, state, and a ZIP when already known. Its result confirms delivery format. It does not name a resident. Next use the Chatham assessor or SAGIS for parcel facts, then apply lawful voter or archive channels only when the purpose and access rules fit.
- Enter the full delivery address in USPS. Copy the standardized street line and confirmed code.
- Open the Chatham assessor by property address. Record the situs ZIP, owner mailing ZIP, and parcel ID as separate facts.
- Open SAGIS and overlay ZIP Codes with Municipality. Check whether the parcel is in Savannah or elsewhere in Chatham County.
- For a lawful ZIP-wide project, ask whether an existing assessor export or voter-file extract is available. My Voter Page cannot browse a ZIP.
- Narrow to a street or parcel before testing names. The Savannah street directory handles that next level.
ZIP filters can produce long and mixed result sets. Ownership does not prove occupancy, and a voter list omits nonvoters and protected addresses. Keep the code as a geographic filter, not as an identity match.
The USPS tool is the official first check for delivery format.
Its result should be paired with a parcel and municipality check before any resident search.
Savannah Mailing and Situs ZIPs
The Chatham assessor keeps two address concepts. The situs address is the physical location of the parcel. The owner's mailing address is where tax notices go and may be elsewhere. Each can have a different ZIP. A homestead flag can support owner occupancy, but it still does not list every person in a home.
| Address Fact | What It Means | Search Use |
|---|---|---|
| Situs ZIP | Delivery code tied to the property location | Filter physical Savannah parcels |
| Mailing ZIP | Where the owner receives tax mail | Possible owner contact clue, not occupancy |
| Parcel ID | Stable property identifier | Links assessor data to GIS and deeds |
| Legal description | Ward, lot, subdivision, or boundary text | Controls when address labels change |
Record all four fields when comparing people or addresses. A Savannah ZIP code directory can sort place-based clues, but the parcel ID and legal description are stronger property keys.
Savannah Voter ZIP Requests
Georgia My Voter Page is designed for one voter to authenticate with a first initial, last name, Chatham County, and date of birth. It returns status, polling place, districts, sample ballot, and participation history. It has no public browse-by-ZIP mode and never shows ballot choices.
A full voter list is a separate order under Georgia election law. Public fields may include name, residence and mailing addresses, registration date, status, and participation history, while protected data is withheld. The order form supports a municipality, county, district, or precinct selection. A Savannah municipal file is listed at $65 and a whole Chatham County file at $70. Output is usually CSV after payment, with an estimated one-to-two-week delivery.
The Chatham County Board of Registrars is the local contact for public election information and list-order routing.
The office can clarify whether a precinct or municipal extract fits a ZIP-based study, since precinct and postal lines are not the same.
Savannah ZIP Data Limits
Census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, or ZCTAs, are statistical approximations. They are not USPS delivery routes. ZCTA counts can give broad population context, but they should not be presented as an exact resident count for a postal code. Carrier routes are also delivery units rather than city boundaries.
Archives can help when an address moved between old and new systems. The Savannah archival repository directory lists local collections that hold directories, maps, and neighborhood sources.
These sources can explain an older street or ward reference, while USPS and SAGIS control the present delivery and boundary checks.
Savannah ZIPs Versus City Limits
A postal address that ends in Savannah does not prove City of Savannah jurisdiction. The mismatch is especially important in 31407, 31408, 31410, 31411, and 31419. Use the municipality layer in SAGIS, not the postal-city text, to decide which local office holds permits, code files, and municipal records. County property and deed systems still cover Chatham parcels across those lines.
The Savannah ZIP code directory is therefore a starting filter. USPS answers delivery. SAGIS answers mapped jurisdiction. The assessor ties a parcel to a situs address and separate owner mailing address. Deeds and plats supply the legal property description. None of those records alone identifies every person in a household.
- ZIP versus ZIP+4
- A ZIP is the five-digit delivery area. ZIP+4 adds four digits to narrow a delivery segment.
- PO-box ZIP
- A code used for post-office boxes rather than a residential land area, such as 31421.
- Unique ZIP
- A code assigned for a high-volume institution or special use. Verify the exact classification with USPS.
- Carrier route
- A mail-delivery path within a ZIP, not a legal neighborhood or municipal district.
Boundary check. Never use a Savannah postal label alone to claim an address lies inside the City of Savannah.
